SOFSEM 2000 - Travel Instructions

SOFSEM 2000 LOCATION:

SOFSEM 2000 will be held in Milovy, Czech Republic. Milovy is a small village in the Bohemian-Moravian Uplands (the central part of the Czech Republic) by the town Nove Mesto na Morave, not too far from central higway D-1 connecting Prague and Brno, two biggest cities of the country. The distance between Milovy and Prague is about 200km.

HOTEL / CONFERENCE CENTRE:

SOFSEM 2000 will take place in the hotel Devet skal (Devět skal, 'Nine Rocks') located in the village Milovy, at the waterside of a pond. The hotel offers modern and attractive facilities, including excellent accommodation, conference rooms, and recreation facility (swimming pool, sauna, fitness centre, day club, coffee-rooms, and other services).

VENUE / CLIMATE:

Milovy is one of the best known tourist and sport centres of the Bohemian-Moravian Uplands (altitude of about 700 meters). Concerning the weather at the time of SOFSEM, the temperature will be probably ranging from -5 to +5 degrees of Celsius, with occasional rain and snow showers; even heavy snowing, although not very probable, cannot be excluded. Drivers should be aware of icy roads occuring in the winter season. The hilly country is very colourful and pleasant for cross-country skiing (skiing equipment is available at the hotel sport centre) and/or walking -- therefore good shoes and sufficiently warm clothing are recommended.

TRAVELLING TO SOFSEM

The nearest international airports are Prague (recommended because of better public transport connections to Milovy) and Vienna.

Prague - Milovy by Sofsem bus

Special SOFSEM bus will be organized mainly for foreign participants travelling from Prague on Friday November 24th.
The seats must be reserved in advance and confirmed via sofsem@sofsem.cz.
Deadline for preferences for foreign participants - November 10.
The bus will depart from - Zikova street No 4
(Rector office of Czech Technical University),
Metro station 'DEJVICKA' (see global and detail maps of Prague) at 18:00.
If date/time of Sofsem Microbus departure is not convenient for you, Prague-Milovy by train can be an option.

Prague-Milovy by train

The nearest local railway station to Milovy is Nove Mesto na Morave. From there a regular bus connection between Nove Mesto na Morave and Milovy operates.
As fast trains from Prague DO NOT stop at Nove Mesto na Morave, participants should change at Zdar nad Sazavou for local train to Nove Mesto na Morave and then continue by a local bus to Milovy (see table below).
Recommendation for foreign participants:
Go from Prague to Zdar nad Sazavou (to be pronounced as 'Zhdyaar nad Saazavou') and than the transport by SOFSEM car should be requested (preferably in advance) to take you from Zdar nad Sazavou railway station to Milovy.

Vienna - Milovy by train

You can use EuroCity trains Vienna-Prague to get to Ceska Trebova; then the transport by the SOFSEM car should be requested (in advance) to take you from Ceska Trebova railway station to Milovy.

TRAVELLING FROM SOFSEM:

A more precise/convenient travel plan can be prepared for you at SOFSEM 2000; below you will find just a few connections for your information.
A special SOFSEM bus is to be organized on Saturday December 2 to take participants from Milovy to Zdar nad Sazavou railway station for trains to Prague, Brno, and Bratislava. The bus will depart from Milovy at 6:45 a.m. arriving to Zdar nad Sazavou railway station for trains to Prague (R672, 7:30-9:46) and to Brno/Bratislava (R277, 8:08-11:07).
