The modern Geographic Information System should provide powerful user-oriented information systems for maintenance and analysis of spatially referenced data. The first part of the talk gives a gentle introduction into the area of GIS, their applications, and a short overview of fundamental features in traditional GIS. Problems and deficiencies in the traditional point of view about GIS will be indicated. The second part shows an impact of new computer technologies on future GIS. Fundamental features of future GIS will be discussed, and the concept of Geographic Information Management Systems and the object-oriented data model will be introduced. Finally, an exciting world of Open user-oriented GIS will be suggested.
